The last days of school and summer break are exciting times for children and they may become preoccupied and forget the rules of the road. It’s up to drivers to help keep our little friends safe as the school year ends and summer begins.
Here are some tips:
- During the last few days of school, be aware that kids may be arriving or leaving school at different times.
- Use extra caution when driving through school zones.
- When school is out and the weather is perfect, there is all the more reason to be extra careful, as children and walkers alike are streaming outside. They are not thinking about the white line that they should stay behind or the vehicle coming up the road.
- There are more children out and about through June, July, and August than during the school year, and many of these children are likely to hit the streets on bicycles, scooters, skateboards, or on foot.
- Observe carefully when driving around playgrounds and parks. Small children are less predictable and harder to see than adults.
- When driving through neighborhoods, motorists should keep an eye out for balls and toys that roll into the street – a child is more than likely to follow.
- When you see children, slow down and anticipate that they will suddenly dart in front of your vehicle, without even seeing you coming.
